(Beginner Guide)
Learn the correct way to place all pieces before starting a Shogi game.
🟨 Introduction
Before you start learning strategies or piece movements,
you must first understand how to properly set up a Shogi board.
The initial position is always the same, and learning it will help you memorize piece roles faster.
🟩 H2: Board Orientation
Shogi boards have a clear front and back direction.
H3: Player Perspective
Sit facing each other The bottom side is your side The top side is the opponent side All pieces should face toward the opponent
H3: File and Rank Layout
The board has 9 rows × 9 columns Japanese numbers (一〜九) sometimes appear on the side

🟦 H2: First Rank (Your Back Row)
Place the major defensive pieces here.
H3: From Left to Right
Lance (香車) Knight (桂馬) Silver General (銀) Gold General (金) King (玉 / 王) Gold General (金) Silver General (銀) Knight (桂馬) Lance (香車)
※ The King is placed in the middle.
🟪 H2: Second Rank
Place two powerful long-range pieces here.
H3: Positions
Bishop (角) → second row, left side Rook (飛車) → second row, right side
🟫 H2: Third Rank
Place all nine Pawns here.
H3: Pawns (歩兵)
Place nine Pawns across the entire third row They should all face forward toward the opponent
🟥 H2: Opponent’s Side
The opponent’s side mirrors your setup exactly.
🟧 H2: Complete Starting Position
At this point the board should look like a perfect mirror image between both players.
You can now begin the game!

Memorize the first rank first (Lance → Knight → Silver → Gold → King → Gold → Silver → Knight → Lance) Rook and Bishop are easy:just “second row corners” Pawns fill the whole third row Practice setting up quickly—it helps with learning piece movements
