♟ 矢倉囲い

The Yagura Castle (矢倉囲い) is one of the most respected and widely used defensive formations in shogi. A cornerstone of Static Rook (居飛車 / ibisha) strategy, the Yagura has been the battleground for countless legendary professional games and remains essential knowledge for any serious shogi player.

What Is the Yagura Castle?

The Yagura Castle is a multi-layered defensive formation that positions the King on the left side of the board (for Sente), supported by a structured arrangement of gold and silver generals. Unlike the Mino Castle, which is fast but somewhat one-dimensional, the Yagura offers robust defense in multiple directions and a stable platform for long, strategic battles.

The word yagura (矢倉) means “turret” or “watchtower” in Japanese — and the castle lives up to that name with its tall, fortified structure.

When to Use the Yagura Castle

The Yagura is primarily used in Static Rook vs. Static Rook (相居飛車) matchups, where both players keep their rooks on the original file and the game develops in a positional, strategic manner. It is less common (though not impossible) in games against ranging rook opponents, who tend to prefer the Mino-family castles.

How to Build the Yagura Castle (Step by Step)

  1. Move a pawn forward on the 7th file to open a path for the King
  2. King to 7-8 — begin moving the King to the left
  3. King to 6-8 — continue the King’s journey
  4. King to 7-8, then 6-8 (exact route depends on the variation)
  5. Gold to 7-8 — bring the gold general up to support the King
  6. Silver to 7-7 — place the silver above the gold to form the upper wall
  7. Gold to 6-7 — add the second gold for a complete defensive structure

The Yagura takes more moves than the Mino — typically 8 to 12 moves — but the result is a significantly stronger all-around defensive structure.

Strengths of the Yagura Castle

  • Strong in all directions — unlike the Mino, the Yagura resists both horizontal and vertical attacks effectively
  • Stable for long games — its solid structure holds up well through extended positional battles
  • Professional pedigree — the Yagura has been studied at the deepest levels of competitive shogi for decades

Weaknesses of the Yagura Castle

  • Slow to build — the extra moves needed can let the opponent develop faster
  • Complex variations — the Yagura opens into many complex sub-variations that take time to master
  • Can be difficult against Anaguma — facing the ultra-solid Anaguma with a Yagura requires precise play

How to Use the Yagura in a Game

Patience is the key virtue when playing the Yagura. Take the time to build the castle fully before committing to an attack. In Yagura vs. Yagura games — where both players build the same castle — the battle often becomes a deep positional struggle where small advantages accumulate over many moves.

Study the Yagura carefully. Its complexity is a feature, not a bug: the more you understand it, the more advantage you gain over opponents who do not.
