What Is the Yagura Castle?
The Yagura Castle is a multi-layered defensive formation that positions the King on the left side of the board (for Sente), supported by a structured arrangement of gold and silver generals. Unlike the Mino Castle, which is fast but somewhat one-dimensional, the Yagura offers robust defense in multiple directions and a stable platform for long, strategic battles.
The word yagura (矢倉) means “turret” or “watchtower” in Japanese — and the castle lives up to that name with its tall, fortified structure.
When to Use the Yagura Castle
The Yagura is primarily used in Static Rook vs. Static Rook (相居飛車) matchups, where both players keep their rooks on the original file and the game develops in a positional, strategic manner. It is less common (though not impossible) in games against ranging rook opponents, who tend to prefer the Mino-family castles.
How to Build the Yagura Castle (Step by Step)
- Move a pawn forward on the 7th file to open a path for the King
- King to 7-8 — begin moving the King to the left
- King to 6-8 — continue the King’s journey
- King to 7-8, then 6-8 (exact route depends on the variation)
- Gold to 7-8 — bring the gold general up to support the King
- Silver to 7-7 — place the silver above the gold to form the upper wall
- Gold to 6-7 — add the second gold for a complete defensive structure
The Yagura takes more moves than the Mino — typically 8 to 12 moves — but the result is a significantly stronger all-around defensive structure.
